Poland’s President Vetoes Crypto Bill Amid Regulatory Clash
Polish President Karol Nawrocki has vetoed the controversial Crypto-Asset Market Act, framing it as an overreach that threatens economic freedom and national stability. The legislation would have granted authorities sweeping powers to block cryptocurrency websites—a provision critics compared to digital authoritarianism.
The decision pits Nawrocki against Finance Minister Andrzej Domański and Deputy Prime Minister Radosław Sikorski, who warned the veto could create regulatory limbo. Market participants now await the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework, which economist Krzysztof Piech argues will provide clearer investor protections without stifling innovation.
Industry analysts note the veto prevents Poland from implementing redundant regulations ahead of MiCA’s 2024 rollout. The president’s office emphasized that complex compliance requirements WOULD have driven blockchain businesses to more crypto-friendly EU jurisdictions.
